“Surreptus” is Latin for “oozing” or creeping”. This piece highlights the process of growth, in the face of decay as the cambium appears to flow up, over, and into the cavity created by a rotted branch. The living tissue, scorched black, almost appears cancerous as it works to overcome the destruction caused by the wood rot. The tree is in an irreversible state of decline but it still stands, as does the piece.
