“Betula Imbre” is Latin for “birch spray” where spray has two meanings. The first is related to the form of water when it is driven through the air in small droplets as you would find in a fountain. This pertains to the form of the birch branches at the top of the drums. The second meaning, however, refers to a grouping of twigs such as those used for birch brooms or “besoms,” which were used for rites of purification, renewal, and fertility. They also became associated with witches, or women of the forest, who had a special understanding of wild nature.
