“Collus” is Latin for “head and neck” or "bust”. This piece is made from a rare specimen of American elm. It is almost impossible to find an elm this big today as they usually succumb to Dutch elm disease before reaching 25 years of age. However, luck and isolation allowed this tree prosper in excess of 100 years, before it was blown down. This status of this species as threatened is reflected in its posture.
