"Extendo" refers to the extension of the form's two wings. It also refers to the idea of being pushed beyond limits. In this case, valuable hardwood trees can develops internal fissures or "shakes" while living as a result of climate change, where an extremely dry season is followed by an extremely wet season. Here, a "ring shake" produces a surface of weak tissue between growth rings, resulting in internal separations that substantially reduce its market value upon harvesting.
