"Betula Ionica" is Latin for "Ionic Birch", referencing its columnar form and its Ionic proportions of 1:9, base diameter to height. In between the nine drums are black disks made from Baltic birch plywood of diminishing diameters as they are repeated upwards, outlining an actual classical column, following the rule of "entasis" or tapering, mimicking the actual tapering of a tree. Together, the natural and the human-made forms produce a rusticated Ionic column, the classical order associated with the proportions of the older woman, the matron.
